Randomized workplace experiment

Routine calling activity increased in a phone-restricted condition

A four-hour experiment with 121 telephone interviewers found roughly 13% more call attempts per minute under the strongest condition, which combined a phone restriction with trust-based messaging. Completed interviews did not improve as reliably, so the result supports increased activity—not a universal 13% productivity claim.

In a field experiment with 247 participants, disabling communication-app notifications for one workday benefited parts of performance and strain. The effects varied with factors such as fear of missing out and workplace telepressure.

2024 meta-analysis

A nearby phone alone is not the strongest evidence

Across 166 effects from 53 samples, the overall cognitive effect of a smartphone’s mere presence was essentially zero. A small negative effect appeared in one working-memory subset. The more defensible business concern is active interaction and interruption—not phone proximity by itself.

Some tasks carry much higher distraction stakes

FMCSA reports that commercial drivers who text are 23.2 times more likely to experience a safety-critical event. This is not a general workplace crash multiplier; it is task-specific evidence that active phone interaction can become especially consequential in safety-sensitive environments.

What this means for a business

Start where focus can be measured cleanly.

Contact centers, inside sales, appointment setting, recruiting, and routine back-office teams are practical early use cases. Their work often includes phone-light windows and high-frequency outcomes such as attempts, completions, handle time, accuracy, or throughput.

    Start with a 60–180 minute period when personal phones are not essential and the team already tracks a trusted operational result.

    Record a clean baseline

    Measure the existing workflow for two to four weeks. Account for role, shift, staffing, workload, seasonality, and quality—not only output volume.

    Run a bounded Focus intervention

    Invite employees to use Payphone during the selected window for six to eight weeks. Track adoption and verified quiet time as mechanisms, not as proof of productivity by themselves.

Privacy-safe measurement

Verify Focus. Do not inspect the phone.

Employers can evaluate eligible time, verified quiet time, completed sessions, rewards, and a pre-agreed business KPI. Payphone does not show employers apps used, messages, browsing, screen contents, precise location, or off-shift activity.

Focus is all-or-nothing. An employee can end it whenever necessary; ending the session stops rewards and resets momentum rather than pausing the ramp in place.
